So I decided to play in my craft room and get inky…this is the result, a Butterfly Wall Hanging.  Boy were my fingers all kinds of colors, but that’s the fun part of it all.  After the pictures of the wall hanging is the tutorial, which means this post has lots of pictures, but worth it.  Love, love, love butterflies and the teal and purple butterfly is my favorite.  Hope you like it.

BUTTERFLY WALL HANGING

MATERIALS
(2) 12 X 12 Medium Weight Chipboard (for panels)
(3) 8½ x 11” Kraft Cardstock (for panels)
(1) 12 x 12 Colored Cardstock (backing)
Tim Holtz/Sizzix Wood Grain Embossing Folder
Grunge Paper (for butterflies)
Memory Box dies: Asti Butterfly Wings and Effera Butterfly Wings
Tim Holtz Distress Inks – Many (for butterflies)
Distress Crackle Paint – Clear Rock Candy (for butterflies)
Punch Used – Martha Stewart French Scroll (for backing)
Chain or Rope (for hanging)
Tim Holtz Charm Clips (2 clips and 2 jump rings) (for hanging)
2 Brads (for hanging)
MAKING BUTTERFLIES
Cut out of grunge paper: (4) Large Butterflies and (13) Small Butterflies from the Memory Box dies: Asti Butterfly Wings and Effera Butterfly Wings

I colored each butterfly with 2 colors. Cover the whole butterfly in 1 color then highlight the edges with a different color (usually a darker color). The body of the butterfly I colored with the secondary color.

Dry after inking. Then apply Distress Crackle Paint – Clear Rock Candy.

Once dry (let them sit overnight), add stain. I would apply stain then wipe off excess with paper towel. Then dry with heat gun. Most are stained with either Vintage Photo or Peeled Paint. Glue the body to the wings (I used glossy accents).
I made more than I need than choose the ones I liked the best.

Here are a few close ups and the inks that I used.  First up is my favorite.

Peacock and Seedless Preservation

 Peeled Paint and Vintage Photo

Spiced Marmalade and Festive Berry
Ice Spruce and Seedless Preservation

PANELS AND BACKING

Cut out of Kraft Cardstock or similar (6) 6 x 4½”.
Use Tim Holtz Wood embossing folder and emboss all 6 pieces.

Ink using Gathered Twigs and Walnut Stain. Start with the Gather twigs and cover the whole surface and then come back with Walnut Stain to darken up some areas.

Cut out of Chipboard: (6) 3½ x 4½”
Add tape to your chipboard piece and attach to the center of your cardstock.

Add tape to the edge of your chipboard. Remove tape backing just from the corners and fold over the cardstock corners to attach. Run a bone folder along the chipboard edge to crease the cardstock.

Fold over and attach the sides.
Make 6 of these panels.

Cut out of 12 x 12 Cardstock (1) 8½ x 12” and (1) 8½ x 3”
Punch a board on three sides of both pieces. I used Martha Stewart French Scroll

Scotch tape the two pieces together overlapping about 1/2″ just to keep them together.

 Cut out of Chipboard: (1) 7¼ x 12 and (1) 7¼ x 1¾”

Add tape to your chipboard pieces on one side.

Attach chipboard pieces to the backside of the Cardstock piece.

FOR HANGING
For hanging the piece, you need 2 brads, 2 Tim Holtz Charm Clips with jump rings, and 2 rings
Attach the 2 rings to the 2 jump rings.

Cut out of Chipboard: (2) 1 x 1 pieces
Place the jump ring about 3/8” from the top, centered and mark with a pencil (on both pieces).

Punch or poke a hole where the mark is (on both pieces).

Attach jump ring with a brad (on both pieces).

Add tape to the backside of the hanging pieces and attach to the top of the wall hanging about ¾” from the edge on both sides.

Add tape to the back of the 6 “wood” panels.

Attach the 6 panels to the paper leaving about ¼” all the way around.
*no picture.
Place your butterflies where you want them.

Use Glossy Accent or similar to attach your butterflies. Only add glue to the center (body) section of the butterfly. Shape the wings before attaching. I just made them go upwards.

Add chain or rope to hang it to the wall.

This is a fast and easy project to make and a whole lot of fun to play around with inks.
